Roundtable Following Up on the New Shimoda Conference

On April 7, 2011, JCIE and the US-Japan Council co-sponsored a roundtable on Capitol Hill with US Congressional members and experts on US-Japan relations. Discussions centered on how to strengthen US-Japan relations in order to meet future challenges and how to create a more robust and meaningful partnership between the two countries.

Reinvigorating US-Japan Policy Dialogue and Discussion in a Time of Political Change

JCIE’s study on Reinvigorating US-Japan Policy Dialogue and Discussion in a Time of Political Change examined the state of policy dialogue between Japan and the United States and nongovernmental linkages that have facilitated contact between political leaders and policy experts in each country. Based on this research, JCIE released an English report in December 2010.

Japanese-German Forum | 19th Forum

The 19th Japanese–German Forum was held on November 11–13, 2010, bringing 34 participants from both countries together in Berlin to discuss current trends within Japan and Germany and possible avenues for close bilateral cooperation.

UK-Japan 21st Century Group | 27th Conference

The 27th annual meeting of the UK-Japan 21st Century Group took place on October 21–24, 2010. Bringing 34 leaders from the two countries together, the forum included meetings on a range of domestic and global concerns where deeper UK-Japan relations can play a critical role.

Korea-Japan Forum | 18th Meeting

On October 3-5, 2010, the Eighteenth Korea-Japan Forum took place. Approximately 40 leaders from the political, nonprofit, academic, media, and corporate sectors gathered to discuss a variety of topics, including socio-political developments in both countries, the changing economic environment in Northeast Asia and the future of Korea-Japan economic cooperation, and regional security issues.

Global Governance and Human Security Seminar

On September 29, JCIE organized a lecture on “Global Governance and Human Security” with Ambassador Yukio Takasu, who most recently served as permanent representative of Japan to the UN (2007–2010). About 80 participants from domestic and international NGOs, academia, the media, and the public sector attended the lecture.

FGFJ | Prime Minister Kan Opens Access to Life Photo Exhibit

On September 3, 2010, Prime Minister Naoto Kan opened a special launch event for the Tokyo exhibition of a joint photographic project by Magnum Photos and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. This exhibit documents the impact of antiretroviral treatment on the lives of people living with AIDS around the world and is designed to give a human face to the global effects of the disease.

Symposium on Universal Coverage in the 21st Century: Redefining Japan’s Health System

In partnership with renowned international medical journal, the Lancet, and the Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan’s leading newspapers, JCIE organized an international symposium on September 1, 2010, to explore the issue of universal coverage in aging societies like Japan, and to discuss preliminary findings of analysis on Japan’s health system.
