30th Japanese-German Forum

November 16-18, 2022
Tokyo, Japan

The Japanese-German Forum was held in Tokyo on November 16–18, marking the 30th anniversary of this dialogue that was launched in 1993 as a joint initiative of Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, as a private, bilateral dialogue designed to promote mutual cooperation and understanding. The meetings are held annually, with JCIE and the Japanese-German Center Berlin serving as the secretariat. The forum, hosted in-person for the first time since COVID-19 began, was facilitated by Chairman Eizo Kobayashi (Director Emeritus, Itochu Corporation) and Chairman Matthias Nass (Chief International Correspondent, DIE ZEIT). More than 40 Japanese and German politicians, policy experts, business leaders, and journalists participated to discuss the key topics of politics and economics in Japan and Germany a year into the Ukraine Crisis, the German and Japanese roles in fighting authoritarianism, and possible German-Japanese cooperation on reformulation of energy strategy. Throughout the three Forum sessions, the overarching theme was that multifaceted cooperation between the two countries is more necessary than ever in the face of ongoing international instability.

Highlights of the Forum included receptions hosted by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Kenji Yamada and Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Japan Dr. Clemens von Goetze, respectively, as well as a meeting with Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno.
