Hiroshima G7 Global Health Task Force Dialogue Series

February 1–10, 2023
Online

Japan is hosting the G7 Summit in Hiroshima on May 19–21, 2023. Japan’s presidency comes at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic, the crisis in Ukraine, climate change, and other global events have impacted almost every aspect of society and nature.  Prior to the start of Japan’s presidency, JCIE established the Hiroshima G7 Global Health Task Force under its Executive Committee on Global Health and Human Security. The Task Force, a multistakeholder, cross-disciplinary group made up of over 30 domestic members and international advisors, is working to craft recommendations to the Japanese government on the G7 agenda for global health on the major three themes of: 100 Days Mission and Access & Delivery (100 Days Mission PLUS); resilient, equitable, and sustainable Universal Health Coverage (UHC); and global health architecture including sustainable financing.

While crafting these recommendations, the Task Force members convened a series of meetings with various representatives from the G20 Health and Development Partnership, C7, NGOs,  the Global South, and global health advocates to discuss the various priorities of the Task Force ahead of the G7 Summit in May.

Dialogue with C7 members

February 10, 2023
Members from the Task Force met with representatives from the Civil Society 7 (C7), one of official Engagement Groups of the G7 representing positions from international civil society, and presented the Task Force’s draft recommendations to the Government of Japan ahead of the G7. C7 members provided comments on the recommendations and joined in on a discussion with Task Force members on how to ensure civil society has a voice at the table.

Discussion

  • How can G7 promote global efforts to ensure that “no one left is behind” under the goal to attain UHC by engaging CSOs and communities in health system strengthening, and financial resource mobilization for health?
  • How can G7 ensure more equitable access to medical countermeasures (MCMs) while increasing incentives for rapid R&D? How can G7 ensure transparency and accountability to the Global South and CSOs throughout the value chains of MCM?
  • How can G7 contribute to transforming the global health architecture to adapt to a new normal in terms of norm-setting through the negotiation process of the international legal framework for PPR, institution building, and financial arrangements?

February 08, 2023
The UK launched the 100 Days Mission (100DM) at the 47th G7 in 2021. The 2023 Hiroshima G7 Global Health Task Force (GHTF) emphasizes in its draft recommendation the importance of strengthening the “end-to-end” structure of medical countermeasures, from R&D, manufacturing, procurement, delivery, and to more equitable access (uptake) called the 100 Days Mission “PLUS.” The purpose of the dialogue session is to obtain input from experts in areas related to the 100 Days Mission on what actions G7 should take and to improve the Hiroshima G7 GHTF recommendation to the governments of G7 countries, including Japan.
