Japan and America Can Restore a Healthy World Order

“In global health today, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Biden have much to take on: finishing the contest against Covid-19 (a game deep into extra innings), shoring up programs against longer-standing infectious diseases, preparing for inevitable new pandemics, and strengthening health systems—leaving no one behind, in the words of the Sustainable Development Goals.”

In this opinion piece, JCIE Senior Fellow Jim Gannon and Friends of the Global Fight Chief Policy Officer Mark Lagon discuss the long history US-Japan cooperation in the field of global health. Gannon and Lagon then offer three key focus areas that would allow both countries to continue addressing critical health concerns: (1) joint leadership at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (Global Fund)’s Seventh Replenishment, (2) effective and equitable pandemic preparedness, and (3) bilateral funding to ensure Universal Health Coverage.
