Wall Street Journal’s Byron Tau examines Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s push to amend the country’s pacifist constitution and the political realities he’s facing.

“TOKYO—As Prime Minister Shinzo Abe embarks on a push to amend the country’s pacifist constitution, he is running into the political realities of a resistant public and a rapidly closing window of opportunity.

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party is expected in the fall to begin drafting language that would formally recognize the country’s Self-Defense Forces in the constitution, as Mr. Abe has proposed.”
